Friendship is another idea explored in the text. In Deadly Unna Blacky becomes close friends with Dumby through the situations they are put through and Australian Rules football. An experience they shared outside AFL was when Mad Dog was beating-up Blacky and no-one came to his aid except Dumby. After the situation Blacky says ‘It was just the excuse I needed. Now I could stop hating Dumby’s guts’. This quote displays that Blacky had some admiration for Dumby and appreciation that he had stood up for him. Times where I have experienced this kind of friendship is from my older brother, where many times I have had him by my side to give me support, help, guidance and be my best friend.
An example of this was when we were younger in primary school. I was in the yard when I was confronted to by two older students who began harassing me when my brother came to my aid. He confronted them and made them apologise. This experience gave me feelings of security, insurance, support, loyalty and ultimately friendship because he was there for me which were similar feelings to Blacky’s when Dumby rescued him from Mad Dog.
